Effective ways to motivate employees to increase productivity

In  the final article, I would like to share some practical methods that could be implemented in an organization to motivate employees. Motivation plays an important role in today’s work environment as motivated employees are more productive employees. Manager’s duties in today’s corporate world are multi-faceted. Not only do managers need to be versed in finance, economics, and information systems, it is now essential for them to have a firm grasp on organizational behavior and psychology. They must know how their people think and what makes them do so. Some of the key methods to motivate employees are while increasing the company’s productivity and profitability are (Anderson, 2000).

1- Giving Fair Compensation and Benefits (Anderson, 2000).

Compensation and benefit policies are the most significant aspect of any firm. However, rather than "best," you should base your policy on"suitability."

2- Opportunity for Promotion and Career Development (Anderson, 2000).

Develop programs to promote all titles in the organization, as well as programs for each title's career growth. Every employee should be given the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities, skills, and creativity.

3- Employee Empowerment Across the Company (Anderson, 2000).

Increase the appropriate amounts of new responsibility throughout the organization. Encourage appropriate decision-making and delegate authority to those who are closest to the problem. Ascertain that your employee understands that you trust them to accomplish their work to the best of their abilities.

4-Appreciating and giving honest feedback (Arfah, 2021)

Don't wait till a crisis to provide input. Instead, provide regular constructive feedback on an employee's performance on a wide range of topics, cultivate loyalty, push them to new levels of performance, and keep it authentic.

5- Training and Other Improvement Programs (Arfah, 2021)

Provide necessary education, training and coaching that increases employees skills and shows the employee that you are interested in their success and readiness for new responsibility.

6- Setting goals and rewarding the employees with a bonus (quarterly /monthly) (Arfah, 2021).

An employee can be given a set of goals at the start of the month or quarter and given clear instructions on how the bonus will be calculated. If they achieve their goals, they can be compensated.  This will highly motivate them to perform better and the company will also achieve their goals. For instance some of the goals could be: Number of leads/ Number of sales, etc.

7- Build A Corporate Culture (Wind, 1987).

We should concentrate on establishing effective communication channels, as well as positive and supportive relationships with coworkers and supervisors. Employee happiness can be improved by treating everyone in the organization or firm with respect.

8- Provide Overtime Allowance (Wind, 1987).

This will also motivate the employees who need to earn an additional income to work extra hours. A weekend overtime allowance can also be given for the staff who are willing to work during the weekends/holidays.

9- Recognize the employee of the month, etc at Awarding ceremonies (Kurniawan and Evasentia, 2022).

Recognize the best employee of the month/ year and reward them. Recognize them and celebrate their achievements infront of the whole company. This will motivate others to perform better. Companies can send them abroad on a vacation / paid hotel stay/ dinner out, etc.

10- Train managers to be supportive and friendly with their teams (Wind, 1987).

Managers should be trained  to be social, helpful and friendly with their  team members. This will motivate the team members to perform better. Additionally team outings can be arranged to connect with eachother. These are some effective strategies that an organization can put into place in order to motivate their staff members.

  1. Hi Chathura, I agree with your post. It is not only the qualifications that depend on the work of an employee but the willingness to do the job matters most. The willingness has to be caused through motivation and motivation will accordingly improve all the other factors like productivity and efficiency (Adi, 2000).

    1. Thank you Ruwan. Motivation as a meaningful construct is a desire to satisfy a certain want and is a central pillar at the workplace. Thus, motivating employees adequately is a challenge as it has what it takes to define employee satisfaction at the workplace (Forson, Ofosu-Dwamena, Opoku and Adjavon, 2021).

    1. Thanks Shashith. In addition, Motivation in the work context is expressed as an individual’s degree of willingness to exert and maintain an effort towards organizational goals. Employees have different competing needs that are driven by various motivators. Therefore, to maximize organizational performance, organization and its managers should understand what really motivates the employees (Lee MT, Raschke RL, 2016).

Herzberg’s motivation theory

In any organization, one of the most important aspects of management is to make work productive and to assist employees in achieving their goals. One of the manager's basic tasks is to communicate with and motivate workers  (Mooney, 1985). According to Herzberg, motivation factors are the six ``job content'' factors that include achievement, recognition, work itself, responsibility, advancement, and possibility of growth.    (Wren, 2000).   Herzberg’s Two- Factor theory is classified as (Aquino Jr, 2020).   1- Content theories  (Rhee, 2019) . - Attempt to understand the forces within a person that stimulate and stop activity by focusing mostly on individual needs. They answer the question, "What motivates people?"  2- Process theories (Shields, 2005) . - focus on the "why" and "how" of motivation, formally exploring the thought processes that lead to people choosing one activity over another in the workplace. They look at how a person's i

ERG theory

Job satisfaction is critical for an employee in any organization. Some people are not aware how important job satisfaction is when performing the job.  ERG Theory of Motivation was introduced by Clayton Alderfer  (Alderfer, 1969). Value-added services could be classified into the three need categories of ERG (Alderfer, 1969). 1- The need for existence,  2- The need for relatedness, 3- The need for growth Maslow's basic needs were developed by Alderfer  into existence needs, relatedness needs, and growth needs (Alderfer, 1969). Alderfer proposed the ERG theory based on results of empirical studies to explain the relationship between satisfaction of needs and human desires. His theory was backed by further empirical study (Schneider and Alderfer, 1973). The three needs of Alderfer, existence needs, relatedness needs, and growth needs are explained further. From the Literature review, all these needs will influence the level of job satisfaction.  1- Existence needs (Cheng-Liang Yang,
